Executive Director, Douglass Institute of Government(DIG) Secretary General Sons & Daughters United States Colored Troops (SDUSCT) "Every monument built in memory of the Confederacy will perpetuate that which it would be more creditable in the actors to desire to have forgotten. .... If it is not to reawaken the conflict, by cultivating hatred against the Government, that these monuments are built, there is little or no purpose in their erection. Monuments to the "lost cause" will prove monuments of folly, both in the memories of wicked rebellion which they must necessarily perpetuate, and in the failure to accomplish the particular purpose had in view by those who build them. It is a needless record of stupidity and wrong." -Frederick Douglass, New National Era, Dec. 1, 1870 Georgia stands at the historical epicenter in the legacy of the use of the battle flag of the Confederacy as a universal worldwide standard banner in the cause of racist white supremacy. The mainstream media, liberal or conservative, has acted in concert to keep the general public in ignorance of the indisputable racist legacy of the Confederate States of America and its National Flag. Confederate Civil Religion Protection Acts(CCRPA) have been propagandized by mainstream media pundits to the public as great acts of statesmanship. This lecture will present primary source documents that will expose the deliberate historical fraud behind the transformation of the Confederacy's "lost cause" for Slavery and White supremacy into a "just cause" for states rights and Southern independence as guarantors of white privilege. The symbols we cherish are symbolic of what we are. You cannot separate the honoring of lies from living out the lies you honor. And if you insist you are a person of honor you cannot honor lies without rationalizing the lies you are honoring. Our "Monuments of Folly" in proclaiming a celebration of "Heritage not Hate", even as we memorialize the Confederacy's heritage of hate, not only reveals our hypocrisy, but presents us as ridiculous.
